If you have spare tiles, even pieces, from a previous job, store them in a dry place until you find the proper spot to place them. Later on, you can use them for paving a floor.

In order to do that, you need:
    * notched trowel
    * leveler
    * rubber mallet
    * floor scraper
    * brush
    * self-leveling underlayment
    * prime suspension substrate
    * tiles
    * cement
    * float

First, you have to check if all your tiles are at the same level.

Make sure that the floor, your working surface, is perfectly leveled. If is not, you have to make it. To do so, you need self-leveling underlayment.

Before that, you have to apply a prime suspension substrate, in order to reduce the absorption of the floor. Dilute it with water and apply it with a big brush. After 2 or 3 hours this is dry and the floor is ready.

You have to start applying the self-leveling underlayment from a corner. This kind of material will spread all over the floor by itself. Using a floor scraper, take away all the air bubbles from it. After 12 hours this will be dry and perfectly flat. Always check the instructions of the products not to make any errors.

When you think it is absolutely dry, you can start fixing the tiles.

Glue the scraps one by one using a notched trowel. You need this tool to spread the adhesive on the floor, not more than a half of meter every time you place the tiles. Go on like this until all the floor is covered.

The inconvenience of this method is that it will take much longer to apply the pieces than to apply whole tiles.

When you fix the scraps, hit them carefully using a rubber mallet and keep checking the level using a leveler.

This method is the simple one, even for those who haven't any constructions experience.

Let the adhesive to dry 24 hours before grouting it. Later, when this is also dry, you can clean it with a wet sponge and a dry cloth.

You can start placing the tiles from any corner of the floor because you don't have to cut the tiles at the edges, where are the joints with the walls.

There is also a cheaper way to do this job. You can fix the pieces directly onto the cement substrate and you don't have to apply self-leveling underlayment.

You have to work always using the leveler and pay more attention not to uneven the tiles pieces.

Don't spread the cement underlayment more than a half of meter every time, fix the pieces one by one until you have the job done.

You will save time doing this way, because you level and pave at the same time and you don't have to wait hours to let the self-leveling substrate to get dry and then to start fixing the tiles.

You have to start fixing the scraps from the highest point of the floor and that will be the level you will go on with for the rest of this work. You have also the grouting done at the same time, just clean the surface from time to time. Let it dry at least 24 hours and then clean it properly.

When installing a new sink or counter top, it helps to get a good idea of how high each component is, so you can plan your bathroom accordingly. If you want to install a mirror over the sink, for instance, you need to know how high above the counter top to mount it, this also tells you how high the mirror can be and if it interferes with light fixtures.

Sometimes figuring this out is not as simple as looking on the manufacturers dimensions sheet. When you install a vessel sink, you have to account for several factors, because the sink installs on top of the counter.

This means your final sink and counter height is more than the height of just the cabinets. But adding the two together is not always simple, either. The total overall height of your new sink is the height of the countertop, plus the portion of the sink visible above the vanity top. In order to leave more sink exposed over the countertop, all you need to do is cut a smaller recess hole. To leave less sink exposed and lower the overall height of the sink, cut a larger hole, and set the sink bowl farther into the vanity.

When setting the bowl into the cabinet, you lose some of the height of the sink, so you need to account for this loss in height as well. Calculating this ahead of time is often impossible, because the total height of the sink will end up being determined by the size of the hole you drill in the counter. To be very accurate, only take the final measurement from the floor to the lip of the sink after the sink is installed and glued in place. This prevents any foul ups and ensures a proper remodeling project.

Counter top height is very important in determining the layout of the bathroom because it is how you decide on several fixtures, like a faucet, the vanity mirror, lights and any above the counter cabinets. Do not take this part lightly, as simple little miscalculations can often lead to a much more complicated project that takes several days to finish, instead of just a few.

When deciding on cabinets, consider the total height and compare this to the average, standard height of counter tops, which is between 34 and 36 inches. Then start planning from this measurement.

You are going to need a mildly large space to have your dumpster lay on because a garbage truck is going to have to come and pick it up from a good angle. You can ask the people you are buying from or renting from to see a chart that will explain how much space you need before deciding on a permanent spot.

Concrete and dirt are very heavy. Too much of those materials can exceed the weight limits for driving on the streets. They also are a big risk for traffic. It will be harder to control the vehicle driving the debris away. You will want to ask the rules from the person or company you got it from before just hauling stuff into it and letting it go.

Glorious Granite: Man's Favourite Construction Material

Granite, by definition is an igneous rock which contains no less than twenty percent quartz by total volume. Granite is a volcanic rock formed from magma deep in the Earth's crust which heats existing rocks to melting pint combining with the magma which gives the rock its distinctive speckled or grainy appearance. As this cools, quartz crystals are formed giving granite its defining ingredient. Granite is currently only known on Earth and astro-geologists, being those who study rock formations on other planets, are yet to discover granite like rock formations outside of our blue planet. However seeing as granite is the bedrock of Earth, forming a major part of the continental crust, I'm sure granite like rocks do exist in the far reaches of space.

Here on Earth granite has been the mainstay of the construction industry since at least the time of ancient Egypt. Granite is both ubiquitous and workable which meant the rock could be quarried and hewn within a reasonable distance of the structure it was being used for. The great pyramids of Gaza are hewn from local granite, as are the pyramids of south America and many ancient structures throughout Asia are also constructed from granite. Granite was not only used for huge foundation or construction stones, as it was also commonly carved into statues, the most famous being the Sphinx, and split into granite tiles too throughout the ancient world.

It wasn't for many hundreds of years that granite began to be polished to give it a smooth glass like finish, and it was only then that the true beauty of granite was revealed. The high quartz content gave the stone a sparkle which other common building materials such as marble and limestone did not have. Although marble was commonly used as wall and floor tiles, the ubiquity of granite throughout the ancient world paved the way for dominance of granite floor tiles. Being readily available and incredibly hard wearing, it's no wonder Mesopotamia, parts of Africa and Asia are littered with numerous examples of granite construction and decorative features such as granite tiles.

More recently the huge variety of granites throughout the world has become more accessible and as such, its popularity has grown considerably, especially in domestic use. With better quarrying techniques and more effective polishing, granite floor tiles are becoming more popular than man made ceramics. Granites with an unusually high quartz content or commonly used as tiles, commonly known as galaxy granite tiles due to their resemblance to a night time star scape. Granite tiles is probably the most common use for most quarried granites these days as splitting the granite into thin tiles is far more profitable than using the same block as a single building block. Being the second hardest natural rock on the planet, it's no wonder granite has been used for millenia and is likely to be favoured for many years to come.

Negatives to Using Wood Posts in a Crawl Space

Crawl space foundations are very popular, and it's easy to understand why. Builders often prefer this type of foundation because it requires much less excavation work than a full-height basement foundation. Crawl spaces can be built quickly and inexpensively, offering a very practical way to "get out of the ground," in builder's parlance.

Unfortunately, putting too great a focus on economy can lead to some substandard construction practices. Some contractors deliberately take shortcuts and cost-cutting steps, while others do it because they don't know any better. Either way, using the wrong materials and the wrong details inevitably causes problems.

Wooden Posts: Easy and Inexpensive

A typical crawl space foundation contains at least one beam or girder that runs the length of the foundation, providing mid-span support for the first floor joists. Since the "footprint" or plan of the house is usually too wide for a single joist to span its total width, one or more centrally located girders support joist ends which typically overlap the girder and each other.

Girders or beams also require mid-span support to prevent them from sagging near the middle. Wooden posts were once used to provide this support while resting on concrete pads or piers.

This framing system has been a standard treatment used in conjunction with crawl space foundations for many years. The girder or beam can be made from a single large-dimension piece of lumber such as a 6x10 or 6x12; but the framing crew is just as likely to have built up a thick, deep beam by nailing together several 2x10s or 2x12s. Regardless of the beam treatment, wood posts were installed at regular intervals beneath the beam to keep it from sagging. For framing contractors, this all-wood structural system is simple, inexpensive and easy to execute.

Problems with Wooden Posts

The weak link in the above described floor framing system is without doubt the wood posts that are supposed to keep beams straight and strong. They often fail in this regard for several reasons.

For starters, carpenters often wedge thin wood shims (or tapered wood shingles) between the top of the wood post and the bottom edge of the beam to make the post fit more snugly in place. Usually because the post was cut slightly short, the beam lost some of its width due to shrinkage, or the natural irregularities common to dimension lumber.

While the shims may do their job initially, they too are prone to shrinkage, shifting and compression of the weight of the floor. Over time, the beam can also shrink as it loses moisture, creating a loose-fitting post. When support beneath the beam is inadequate, the beam and floor begin to sag.

Another problem that compromises the stability of the floor system is the mold and rot that often take hold in a damp crawl space environment. A wood post can easily wick up moisture from a concrete footing that's in contact with moist soil. Since mold thrives where there's cellulose and moisture, wood posts can weaken from decay associated with mold. When this happens, their strength and stability suffers.

The Solution: Adjustable, All-steel Supports

Anyone dealing with sinking, bowing or bouncy floors knows this situation isn't one you want to endure for long. Home safety and property value suffer, and like the failing posts below the first floor, furniture must be shimmed up to maintain its proper orientation.

Fortunately, the problems caused by wooden support posts in a crawl space can be overcome by replacing these posts with adjustable steel support posts designed precisely for this retrofit application-- so it can be raised slightly if the beam shrinks. You never have to worry about a steel post weakening because of rot, and some posts are treated with a thick galvanized coating to avoid corrosion problems.

Remember: Wood is good in many construction applications. But for the posts that support the center of the main floor over a crawl space, adjustable steel posts provide long-term stability, strength and durability that wood posts can't match.

The brazing process has five steps: cleaning work pieces, fluxing them, securing them in place, brazing them and cleaning them again. Depending on a metal's composition (e.g. aluminum vs. steel), each step has different requirements that affect the quality of the finished piece, of the work pieces. For those who understand brazing, but not how to braze aluminum, listed below are important considerations regarding the latter.

Cleaning Considerations

The base metal should be free of residue, dirt and oxidization before being brazed. When high quality joints are required, aluminum's oxide finish should be removed as well-a process that amounts to thinning the finish, not removing it. For small pieces, a stainless steel brush can be used, with care taken not to imbed the oxide in the base metal. Large pieces and pieces that have thick coatings are usually dipped in acid solution.

Heating Concerns

There are three things to consider about the heating process: what heating method is ideal, what temperature is necessary based on the composition of the base metal, and clearance between work pieces.

Four heating methods are commonly used for brazing aluminum: handheld torch, used for repairs and small production runs; flux-dip heating, used to join pieces that have different wall thicknesses or other variations; furnace heating, preferred for heating alloys and large production runs; and vacuum and controlled atmosphere heating, creating the highest quality joints and lowest corrosion.

The necessary temperature, and in turn the necessary filler metal, depend on the base metal's composition. When choosing a heat source or filler, know the type of metal you have concerning its alloy, gauge and temper. This will determine the temperature and whether high or low temperature filler will be used.

When calculating clearance between work pieces (.0015 inches is recommended), calculate the thermal expansion effect for your metal. Unlike most metals used in fixtures, aluminum features a high coefficient of expansion, making it easy to not achieve the right clearance between work pieces.

Fluxing Concerns

Most fluxes for aluminum contain alkali and alkaline chlorides and fluorides, although cryolite and chlorides of heavy metals are also used. Usually, a flux is chosen based on one or more of the following needs: a flux whose melting point is below the flow point of the filler metal, a flux that does not attack the base metal, a flux that is cost effective, a flux that can be removed with ease, and/or a flux that limits gaseous emissions.

Commonly used protective coatings include wax, oil, wood stain and polyurethane. This is not to say that all coatings are equally effective, or that no damage can occur. You should take care in particular to protect your bathroom furniture from liquid, heat and sunlight, which are all capable of having a detrimental effect on furniture.

Although your new bathroom furniture will be resistant to water to some extent, it is best to wipe up standing water after you use the bath or shower rather than letting it stand all day. If you stick to a common sense aftercare regime, though, you should be able to keep your new washstand in excellent condition.

Wooden washstands can look fabulous - but they require the most effort to keep them looking that way. Any wooden bathroom furniture, having been made for use in a moisture-rich location, should have been pre-treated by its manufacturer with some sort of protective coating, as wood in its natural state would not last long in a bathroom without deteriorating. The filters are typically used with two containers, one for holding the contaminated water on top and the second to hold the clean filtered water on bottom.

These cartridges can be built into simple gravity-fed systems using buckets or barrels that require no electricity to operate. A standard set up using 5 gallon buckets filters 12 to 15 gallons per day. Adding a siphon hose can increase this to over 30 gallons per day.

If desired, more water can be obtained by putting filters in parallel in the container (a standard 5 gallon bucket will fit up to three filters). Another method to speed up flow is to pressurize the system (either air pressure or water pressure). A simple bicycle air pump and a tightly enclosed container can increase flow rates significantly. Taller containers can also speed up flow rates by increasing the water pressure.

Cartridges last for 3000 to 4000 gallons (6 to 8 months under regular, gravity-fed usage); the lifespan is basically limited by the activated charcoal in the filter. If the water being filtered is very dirty it is possible for the filter to become clogged, however the filters can be restored by scrubbing them gently with a non-soap abrasive pad. Before being used, the shelf life of the cartridges is almost indefinite if the cartridges are kept in a container that minimizes air circulation.

In conclusion the ceramic water filter cartridge is an excellent, way to ensure the availability of potable water even in the worst of times. They provide bacterial and chemical filtering of just about any fresh water source without any external power sources or extra chemicals. They also have the advantages of small size, low cost, and indefinite shelf life. With a little imagination they can be configured into systems that provide various amounts of water, anywhere from a dozen to hundreds of gallons per day

Installing a cabinet on your wall sounds simple, but is it?

Think about where you want the cabinet to be situated. Above the basin is a popular spot, if you've opted for bathroom furniture with a mirrored door; above the toilet is another place where you can take advantage of otherwise wasted wall space. Think about who will be using the cabinet (and if there are any children whose access you wish to limit) when deciding on the best location and height for your cabinet.

The first stage is measuring. This stage is critical to your eventual success: if you don't measure accurately, you may have to drill more than once, and you could also find that your cabinet, once secured on the wall, doesn't hang quite straight. So measure, then double check your measurements. Hold, or ask a helper to hold, the cabinet in its correct place on the wall. Use a spirit level to get the cabinet exactly straight, then draw a pencil line along the top. This line will be hidden from sight once the cabinet is in place, if you're fitting the bathroom furniture so that its top is above eye level.

Measure from the top of the cabinet down to the fixing holes. If your cabinet has not been supplied complete with pre-drilled fixing holes, you'll need to drill these yourself, reinforcing the cabinet if necessary to make sure the holes don't split with the weight of both cabinet and contents when the cabinet is fixed in place; most shop bought bathroom furniture is supplied pre-drilled to make fitting simpler for the customer, however. Measure the distance between fixing holes, as well. All your measurements should take the centre of the fixing hole (not the edge) as the point to which you measure.

Next, measure down from the top line on your wall to the level of the fixing holes. Mark the wall at this point, and measure horizontally along this new line to make sure your fixing hole marks are in the correct place, both in relation to each other and in relation to surrounding items. If you want your cabinet to be above your basin, in the centre of the space available, then measure the space from side to side, locate the centre point, and measure out an appropriate amount on each side of the centre to mark your fixing holes, to ensure the centre of your cabinet will hang in the centre of the space. Don't assume that pre-drilled fixing holes will be equidistant from the centre of the bathroom furniture - check!

Now it's time to secure fixings on your wall from which to hang your cabinet. You'll need to use a different technique for fixing bathroom furniture onto a masonry and plaster wall, a stud wall, and a dry lined wall.

On a masonry (brick or blockwork) wall, covered with plaster, ensure that you use sufficiently long screws so that the wall itself, rather than the plasterwork, supports the weight of the bathroom furniture. Drill your holes, fit wall plugs, then screw into the wall plugs: this should provide a firm mount in most cases. Try to ensure, if you can, that you drill into bricks or blocks rather than into the mortar between them, which will be softer and less supportive. Drill carefully into blockwork, which is often softer than brick, to avoid over enlarging the holes, and use special wall plugs for this type of wall.

Stud walling is plasterboard fixed to vertical timber supports (or studs). Fixings for your bathroom furniture need to be screwed into the studs as plasterboard alone will not be strong enough to support the weight of the cabinet. Find the position of the studs by tapping on the wall: the area with the stud behind it will sound solid while other areas of the wall will sound hollow as you tap. The screws can be fixed into the wall directly; no wall plugs are needed.

Dry lining walls are walls where the plasterboard is fixed to the blockwork wall with blobs of adhesive so that it stands away from the surface of the blockwork. Cutting out a small section of plasterboard around each fixing hole and screwing through a wooden 'spacer', slotted into this gap, into the wall behind means that behind the screw you'll have a secure base of solid wood against solid blockwork which will support the screw as it holds the weight of your bathroom furniture. If you did not do this, the weight of the cabinet could cause the unsupported surface to deform. Once the cabinet is hung on the wall, you won't be able to see any of the modifications you've made to the wall.

If your bathroom wall is tiled, you'll need to be extra careful as you drill the holes to fix your bathroom furniture to the wall. Your drill bit needs to be strong: either a carbide tipped masonry drill bit or a diamond tipped drill bit will be most suitable for tile. The hard, glazed outer surface of the tile makes beginning to drill the trickiest part. Try scoring an X in the tile to give you more surface traction to get started. Drill slowly, building up speed as you go but bearing in mind that persistence, not brute strength, is the key to boring through tile without cracking it. Use cold water to lubricate the top if the drill bit and keep it from overheating if your tiles are hard or thick. When both tile and wall are drilled through, insert your wall plugs as necessary. Ensure that the wall plug is fully in the wall, so that only the unthreaded top section of the screw sits in the tile: any expansion of the wall plug in the drilled section of tile could cause the tile to crack.

Your bathroom furniture, once installed, should last you for a number of years, and if you're not a regular DIYer, you'll be able to feel proud of your installation efforts each time you see it.

There is a vast array of fitted bathroom furniture available to choose from. With styles running from traditional through to ultra contemporary designs which can either be floor standing or wall mounted, and the level of detail varying from plain high gloss styles to more ornate ranges, there's something available to suit most tastes. In terms of use, individual pieces include vanity units, WC units and basin and WC combination units, as well as standard and tall cabinets, corner cupboards, linen and drawer units...

Many of these bathroom furniture components serve a similar function: storage. Storage units and wall mounted cabinets, tall units, drawer units and corner units all deliver capacious space within which you can conceal all your beauty and hygiene products, cleaning items, towels, toilet rolls and miscellaneous bits and pieces. The type and amount of storage space you choose is up to you: do consider your style of storage and the types of items you will want to store, as this will have an effect on your final choice. Drawer units, for example, can be used effectively to organise a multitude of smaller items so that you can find and access them easily and quickly; cupboards will hold bigger, bulkier items, and open shelves are useful for daily use items that you need to have close to hand. A linen unit, fitted within a row of bathroom furniture, offers you the option of storing laundry out of sight in a cabinet that's designed for purpose with a top opening and coordinated with the rest of your fitted bathroom furniture.

Bathroom furniture which serves an additional function generally also offers a sizeable amount of storage space as well. A vanity unit will be fitted with a basin and tap, but will also offer below basin storage. When choosing your vanity unit, consider materials and design. Do you prefer solid wood or MDF; would you rather have a granite, marble, or laminated work surface around your basin? And think about your preferred style of basin and tap: you can choose between under counter basins, inset basins, and counter top basins, and each design interacts differently with the vanity unit below it. You might prefer a basin mounted tap, a work surface mounted tap, or a wall mounted tap. All these decisions will impact upon your choice of vanity unit.

A WC unit is the item of bathroom furniture for you if you prefer a streamlined look for your toilet. The unit hides the toilet cistern and its associated pipework, but has an access panel for ease of access should a fault occur. You toilet is then plumbed in against the unit, with the water supply and waste pipes vanishing either into the unit or down through the floor. If this is your preferred style of toilet, you have one more decision: a back to wall toilet or a wall hung toilet. They sound similar, but wall hung designs are mounted on a metal frame which supports their weight, as no part of the toilet touches the floor, while the weight of a back to wall toilet is borne by the floor on which it stands.

For smaller bathrooms, or for bathrooms where you prefer for whatever reason to minimise the gap between your toilet and your basin unit, there is the basin and WC combination unit. This piece of fitted bathroom furniture combines, as the name suggests, a basin unit and a WC unit into one piece of furniture. This maximises the below basin storage space available to you, as well as using to your advantage the space between the basin and the WC, and the space behind the WC. These units are often less than a metre wide, and their depth depends upon your choice of toilet: choosing a modern toilet with a round bowl will save you a little depth.

If size is an issue in your bathroom, fitted bathroom furniture may be a very wise choice. Although it seems as though it will take up space, cleverly laid out furniture will actually maximise your use of space, transforming a complicated space into somewhere that's easy to move around and pleasant to be; employing alcoves or corners as homes for wall hung cabinets will increase your overall storage space, without reducing your floor space too much.

The smallest vanity units are not much more than 40cm wide and 20cm deep, yet still afford you some storage space in a below basin cupboard - this is not something you can say of a slim pedestal basin, for instance. And tall, slim storage units can be just 35cm wide by 35cm deep but, at almost two metres tall, have (as is characteristic of most bathroom furniture) plenty of capacity within.

Finally, it will be useful to consider the materials out of which your fitted bathroom furniture is to be constructed. The most common options are veneered or laminate covered MDF, or protectively coated natural wood. Solid wood items tend to be a little more 'high end' than MDF pieces and cost a little more; nevertheless, a good quality MDF item can last for many years and will look good in a more contemporary suite.

Colours and wood tones vary across the ranges available, so you should be able to find a finish to suit your precise requirements; aftercare will vary slightly depending on the material you choose, but all bathroom furniture should be kept clean and well cared for post-installation to extend its life.

Surfaces may be wooden, laminate, veneered MDF, granite, or marble. You can choose a matching surface to blend in with your bathroom furniture, or a contrasting colour, shade, or material. Wooden and veneered surfaces will require protective coating (applied by the manufacturer, but possibly requiring maintenance from you) and regular upkeep to keep them looking good; marble is quite a porous material so while it looks tough, is in fact quite easy to stain and needs good care through its life. Granite is the toughest of these counter top materials: it's virtually unscratchable, and needs little more than a regular wipe down to keep it clean and looking good. Staining remains a possibility, so wipe up spills promptly, and reapply a protective natural stone sealant every two years.

If choosing between the two, a bathtub with an overhead shower is almost always the best choice, as it allows for the relaxation of a bath as well as the practicality of a shower. Wooden baths will create that sense of style and still allow you the functionality of a shower overhead.

Bathroom flooring is yet another essential aspect to consider when creating a beautiful, yet practical room. Stone or ceramic flooring can look amazing in a bathroom and can be more affordable than other options.

Locating Plumbing and Wiring

Locating Bearing Walls

Building a Header

Headers hold the support of the 2x4's that are no longer in place once the bathroom design built-in shelving system is in place. A header is usually made from two 2x4's nailed together then placed flat into the opening above the shelf. A header supports the weight of the opening and the 2x4's above the shelf. Two cut 2x4's or jacks hold the header in place above the opening. Any header over four feet in length must be supported by two jacks on each side and a 2x6 double header.

Building a Sill

Once the top and sides are in place, a sill plate must be installed. This board is installed between the two (or four) 2x4's jacks that hold up the header. It should be turned on edge unlike the header and inserted onto the top of the remaining 2x4's that were sheared for the built-in shelf. Attach the sill to the jacks and the sheared 2x4's.

Why are automatic gates important? The popularity of living within a gated community is increasing but why? Are people concerned with status or safety?

Automatic gates are gates that open and close without the assistance of a person when the conditions are presented and fulfilled. For instance, in Oscoda where we vacation we have an automatic slide gate. In order to exit or enter the facility we must press in a code, a different number for each resident. We enter this code into a small access control system that sits to the side of the gate. When we key in the correct code we are then allowed to enter or exit. Emergency vehicles such as police and fire trucks are given an emergency response code to access the gate in case of an emergency with in the cabin association.

There are many positives and negatives associated with gated communities. I love the freedom it allows us on our family trips to the cabin. We know everyone in the association and traffic is always minimal so you feel very safe letting your kids play with other kids in the area without the worry of outsiders entering. The safety I feel on vacation is worth every dime we paid to have the automatic gate. It also gives us a greater sense of security with the cabin when we are not around. I am not as worried about someone entering the cabin and removing our belongings.

The gate is also a wonderful addition to keep the kids from traveling outside of the allotted area. A busy road is right outside the gate. I don't worry at all about my children accidentally riding their bikes out into the traffic causing a potential deadly situation. The gate holds two purposes keeping people out and keeping people in.

I also really like the class status it gives to our cabin association. It defiantly makes the grounds and landscaping richer. I am sure when people drive pass they are thinking about the level of people that live within. Not realizing it is really just us, cabin dwellers. It is funny how something like an automatic gate can change the status of an establishment.

Many people consider automatic gates and inconvenience. My girlfriend hates that when she visits us at the condo she has to call us and we have to buzz her in. I never give my code out to anyone. Personal information such as that is meant to stay within the family and that is it. If someone uses the cabin they are given a temporary code that the association assigns and is only viable during the dates we give them access to the cabin. I know the resale value of our cabin went up once the gate was installed and operating. Of course I see this is a benefit but potential home buyers may not. Gated communities tend to be a bit more pricey than their non-gated counterparts.

Before you decide on living full time in a gated community way the options available to you which will help you make a more educated decision. I know or home is not located within a gated community and I feel equal as safe allowing the kids to play and stay home alone. I have spent time making friends with the neighbors; I choose to live on the end of a private dirt road with minimal traffic and installed motion lights around the house for the evening hours. This and the knowledge that I keep very good tabs on the where about of my family at all times makes me feel like I have made the right choice for both our cabin and residence.
